YP Rich B: This is me at about five/six years old with the world in my hands!!!!
What do you want to be when you grow up???
Twenty years ago this was an extremely relevant question. As a 6 year old, I probably said something along the lines of doctor, lawyer, or astronaut as a response. As I got older the answer turned into professional athlete, musician, or entrepreneur. Twenty years later the question is still relevant. Once you reach 21, shouldn’t you already know or be on the way to becoming what you want to be?? Even worse, what if you don’t have the answer to that question? Surely, eight years of schooling between high school and college should help assist you with that question right?
For most, school can get you on track to becoming something. I definitely did all I was supposed to do as far as school was concerned. I showed up on time, did all the work, and ended up being a good student in terms of grades (B+ Student). I went to college and graduated in 4 years with a bachelor degree in hand ready to become something. So surely at this point I know what I want to be right?
I’ve been out of school for 4 years and have been working that whole time. So what did I become once I grew up? I still don’t have the answer to that question. I know I have a full-time job that I spend a lot of hours at and don’t necessarily feel fulfilled in what I do. So what can I do to solve this problem??
I’ve been encouraged by friends and family to write down goals and take baby steps in achieving those goals. At times it feels like a pointless exercise because the “dream job” doesn’t seem real. I want to make money, buy a house, and live life. The what is not the question, it’s the how. How do I get to those main goals that most people want anyway. Work a dead-end job because I have bills to pay?? Or do I think about that age-old question that I heard 20 years ago??
Ultimately, I know it’s up to me to become whatever I’m going to become. It’s just interesting to think about what I wanted to be as a child and what I’ve become as an adult. By no means is the journey over so I just have to get focused and revert back to that ambition I had when I was younger and felt like I could be whatever I wanted to be. So what do I want to be when I grow up……….Hopefully I’ll know soon.

Sometimes it just takes a little longer for your to realize what you are supposed to be… that doesn’t mean that you won’t get there. I think you should keep your options open and welcome all opportunities.. (dont close any doors that come knocking).. sometimes your dream job.. is what you least expect.
Btw, what a cute little boy. Thanks for sharing.
with so influences on an individual its extremely hard to figure out wat it is that u want to do …..and not just have a job but to do something that excites u and gets ur heart pumped we all have to work to make money pay bills and live a life that we want for ourselves but to actually do wat u want and get payed for it well thats amazing … im def trying to figure out wat it is that i want to do i dont want to much of america’s pie but i want a nice slice … this was a great thread i too sometimes ? myself and try to figure out wat it is i want to do ?
i am still lost as to what i want to be also…so when you find out…let me know…i need some ideas345
Thanks for sharing the blog, i def think alot of people can relate. When i was young i wanted to be a professional baseball player, let’s just say things didn’t work out that way. I think the most important thing is to have fun in life, do things like traveling, or whatever you enjoy, and not make what you want to be when you grow up your primary objective in life…
i really enoyed reading this blog so thanks for sharing.
Wattup Rich,
real talk….best post yet!
Unfortunately, I think more people than we know are struggling with this question…Graduating with a degree in one thing and doing something completely different..I agree with Duong, this is a great post…
Love the photo and blog!! Don’t worry you will def get there! Keep up the great work!
I LOVE THIS! I felt like i was the only person in the world trying to figure out what i want in life. I gave up my full ride for music performance because i was burned out on music, changed my major 5 times in my first semester and now i’m about to enter my second semester of my freshmen year! THANKS doll face :]
