To Master or Not to Master, That is the ?

When I network with other people our age, it seems like a lot of us have the same question, whether to pursue a masters. Some might already be in grad school, or even completed it, but that is a question that I keep going back and forth with. I think to myself, “do I go back to school and get my masters, or do I count on my experience, and ambition to get me through?” I know masters would look great on my resume, and along with my experience, would make me very marketable. I also know I want to be a boss of a program, and masters would give me instant credibility. But along with the positives, I am not that sure if it is the right path I want to take, and I do not want to waste my time on something I am not going to use.

Other dilemmas that I think about include: do I want to accrue more debt, when I already paid most of my debt off? Am I really sure about the career I choose to master? After a long day of work, do I really want to go back to writing papers, studying for midterms, finals, and going to class? Do I want to enjoy my weekends, or do I sit in studying? I know nothing comes easy, and only with sacrifice comes great reward. The positives far outweigh the negatives, but I can’t help to think everything through. As of right now, I am leaning towards pursuing masters, but I am still contemplating. I know, I want to make up my mind as soon as possible, stick to my decision, and then see it through. I guess my next step is to do research, narrow it down, and then go from there. If any of you readers are currently thinking about grad school like myself, in or have finished, feel free to share your experiences and thoughts. Because at the end of the day, we all want to be successful, but sometimes the path is not as easy to find as we would like.

Great questions! But before you make any type of decisions, you should go to the schools you are interested in.. speak to the staff, speak to people that have graduated from the program, go to ‘open houses’ and get a feel of their programs. You shouldn’t make a difficult decisions and trying to weight the pros and cons with out really, really researching what going back to school is really about and what it can offer. But that’s just me.
