Pushing Forward: Focus

As a Young Professional I think one of the most important actions one must take to achieve success is to set goals and do everything possible to achieve them. In addition to setting the goals, I believe a deadline is a must. Without a deadline short-term goals turn into long-term projects. Make your goals slightly difficult but achievable that way when you reach your goals, it will be well worth the struggle.

Unfortunately for most, the problem with reaching goals is the focus it takes to achieve the goals. Personally speaking, I’ve always been the type that would almost look for distractions to get in the way of something I was in the middle of doing. In this day in age we all have plenty of distractions whether they be cell phones, TV, or the Internet. These few items alone will eat up half your day without you even realizing it. YPs, it is crucial that when there are goals we have in sight we make achieving those goals the #1 priority.

The only way this is possible is to focus on your tasks at hand. The one issue I usually run into is that doing “grown-up” stuff is not entertaining so I get bored easily. Reading up on investments, job hunting, or learning about mortgages in itself is not as fun as listening to music or surfing the web. The key to getting through those tasks is constantly reminding yourself of what your goal is. If your goal is to buy a house understand that all that research and time spent will lead you to your own home. While the search and learning is boring, the actual house is the prize and should be worth your time and energy. YPs remember that nothing is impossible but in order to achieve what you’re striving for, your focus and full attention is a must. Set goals and work your hardest to achieve them and reap the benefits.
