Not What If but What Is…

I was watching Lincoln Heights on TVOne last night which is by the way one of my new favorite shows and be quiet I know I’m tardy for the party but I really dig the show.  Last night’s episode had a scene with the youngest daughter of the main family and the babysitter who happened to be a Iraq War veteran and he told the young lady, “It’s not what if but what is…” and that line really stuck with me and inspired this blog.

YPs I know we all have thought about “what if” this would have happened or “what if” that would have happened concerning things that may have happened or decisions we have made in the past.  We sometimes beat ourselves up over events, decisions, and mistakes from our pasts.  It’s cool to reflect on decisions of our past and remember lessons learned from those events or decisions but it’s not good to dwell on them and allow them to affect our present and future adversely.  YPs there is nothing you can do about your past decisions but you can right any wrongs in your future.  Jay-Z has a song on his classic debut album Reasonable Doubt titled “Regrets” in which he raps about learning to live with regrets and in the song he concludes that you have to learn to live with regrets.  There is no blueprint to this thing called life so a lot of regrettable decisions are a product of not knowing any better which is a by product of being young, ambitious and learning as we grow.  Some decisions have different levels of ramifications but for the most part most decisions can be made right by dealing with what is and forgetting about the “what ifs”

Analyze your situation YPs and figure out your “what is” then decide what you need to do to right your wrongs to get to a place where you can grow and be prosperous.  This process may require you to apologize to someone, repay a debt, or a simple change in your decision making process.  A couple of years ago my “what is” wasn’t where I wanted it to be and now my “what is” has made tremendous progress and I look forward to continuous progress.  The funny thing is I still think “what if” but I’m so grateful for mistakes and missteps in my past because I would not be the well rounded Young Professional I am today.  Focus on “what is” and not the “what ifs” YPs and I’ll meet you in ‘Successville’.

I watched this episode last night and I really took away the same thing. we try to say “what if” vs “what is” he was kicking some knowledge to Lizzie- “Liking someone new doesn’t mean you forget the one you love”
