YPRichB: YPs I’d like to introduce singer/songwriter Ian “Imagine” Merritt to you all. Earlier this month he sent us some music to check out and I was impressed by what I heard. Ian “Imagine” Merritt, aspiring singer, rapper, song writer, and entrepreneur. A Hillside, New Jersey native, born from humble beginnings as just a local freestyle battler with a dream. Imagine began freestyle battling at the age of 12. Honing his craft throughout high school, then known as Conspiracy. But there was something more to him than just another local rapper. Along the way, he developed a passion more for singing. Meanwhile, putting his hardcore rapper persona to rest. As most talented singers, Imagine was raised in the church, and Gospel music was instilled in him from the start. There was no doubt in his mind that this was something he was born to do.
Music was no longer a hobby to him, but a life goal he was determined to achieve. Starting with opening his mind to every genre of music. Gospel being the main influence on his voice, but the sounds he had in mind for the type of music was a whole different genre in itself. Influences from artist like ColdPlay, Radiohead, Mutemath, NERD, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Outkast, Gnarls Barkley, and many more, help to create his sound; with a combination of Electric Pop, Alternative Rock, Hip-Hop, and R&B. Although being put in a box is far from what Imagine’s sound is meant to do, Urban Alternative, or Experimental R&B will do just fine. With the mixture of ambient beats, live instruments, soulful vocals, and a splash of everything in between. “Unique” is a word many use, but that he actually embodies.
