YP Interviews

I recently had a sit down with one of my favorite professors from my graduate program, Dr. Richard Cooper. Dr. Cooper graduated from Howard University with a Master in Social Work, and then attended Temple University and received his Ph.D. in Inter-Disciplinary Urban Education. I always enjoyed his class, and the enthusiasm he displayed each every time we met. He is a person that I look up to, so I wanted to get his opinions and gain some insight on how I could carve out my niche and explore different avenues once I graduate. Below are some important points that Dr. Cooper discussed, which I thought my fellow YP’s would find helpful as I did. Appreciate you Dr. Coop, and your knowledge!

Dr. Cooper:

  • After school, use your new spare time to create your own life’s treatment plan. Think about the goals you want to accomplish and work towards them.  Set goals for 1-3 years, and work in attaining them with hard work, and initiation.
  • Never fear rejection when you are working towards a goal
  • Reach out and network with people that you want to be apart of. Whether it is organizations, groups, attending conferences, free lance writing, consulting,  etc…
  • Read books of people who have been successful and who have done it! Read about these people so you can increase your knowledge, and gain a better understanding of how people become successful.
  • Your attitude and mindset is very important, you have to believe!

YPRichB:  Following up on our coverage of the upcoming SMES conference I had the opportunity to interview Eric Terry who actually coordinates the MC/Producer battles for the Summit.  Like the previous interview I did (James and Chubbz Interview), this one was just as informative and motivational.  Again for any artists or people interested in the music/entertainment industry I definitely encourage you to check out this conference next month.  Check out the interview below.

Give a little background on yourself in terms of your experience in the music industry?

I have about 11-12 years in the music industry.  I started out in radio as a marketing promotion coordinator for clear channel then went to radio one then I went over to a national label.  I actually went over to a couple independent record labels.   In the meantime I had my own company which was Star Marketing promotions which is now Eric Terry Promotions and now I moved on to management.  Currently I’m doing marketing and promotions for my company and also management.  I have a couple DJs that I manage, DJ Skillz being one of them, and I also work with some up and coming artists in North Carolina.

YPs, I had a chance to sit down with South Carolina’s own, McKeve.  McKeve is an up and coming hip hop artist with a lot of promise.  In talkin with McKeve I was really impressed with his understanding of business.  He’s come to realize that opportunity is everywhere and he is not trying to let any of them pass him by.  He is very loyal to his hometown and the people who stand behind and right next to him.  Checkout the interview below to get a better understanding of who McKeve, aka BBoy Bobby Baggumz, is.  The audio version is available in the link below.  YPs Stand Up!!!

McKeve Interview (Audio)

YPs, I’m here with hip hop artist, McKeve.  First of all, how are you doing today??

McKeve:  I’m very, very lovely.  I’ve been on the road.  I’m here in Atlanta now. I’m here in the studio with (inaudible) and Tricky Business is in the building also, who was one of the panelists that was down at the conference the last two years that I been there.

Ok, so tell everybody where you’re from, I know you’re in Atlanta now, is that where you’re from???

YPRichB:  I had the honor and privilege to conduct a phone interview with the co-founders of the SMES (Southeast Music & Entertainment Summit) James Heyward and Tony “Chubbz” Marcus.  The conversation was very insightful and I learned a lot in speaking with them.  I would encourage all musicians and people interested in getting into the entertainment business to attend the Summit this year being held Sept. 24-26 in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Below is the transcript of the interview I conducted with them concerning the music conference as well as other areas I feel apply to Young Professionals.  Enjoy.

 What exactly is the SMES?

James: SMES stands for Southeast music and entertainment summit. The purpose of the summit is to provide access to knowledge and resources that individuals in our region need to be successful in the music industry. It was started to basically develop a music industry in this region which is Virginia and the Carolinas. The core of our mission are those 3 states and the conference serves as an outlet for people to network and go to panels and meet people that are truly in the industry from outside of our area. When you live in these states you don’t get access to people as easily as you may when you live in New York and Atlanta. That’s one of the purposes the conference serves, to provide access to the industry.
