Beautifully Brilliant
We are beautiful and brilliant
Not like mainstream or coming a dime a dozen
Beautiful like the first day of fall, soft shades of russets and brown
Fluttering through the cool breeze before gently landing on the ground
Brilliant like diamonds – sparkling, sharp; multifaceted
Glimmer knowing, reaching no boundaries
And though fall comes with cold, crisp and sometimes bitter air
There are no seasons that we cannot bear
We strap on boots, pea coats and toss on a scarf
Step outside into this seemingly brutal season
Taking deep strides with warm steps, leading a trail to our reason
Purpose:
Everything we do. Everything we say.
Everyone we love. Everyone we wish we could hate,
is sprinkled with a bit of this.
Allowing it all to make sense out of madness
No excuses.
Only execution.
There are things to be done
No time to wait for warmer weather or
To see the sliver of light from a peeking sun
Some of us have sons and daughters
We refuse to see go to the slaughter
So we slave – in silence – becoming the person society says we should be
So that when they step fresh foot on said soil
Our children can be free
Free to make the choices no one else has selected
Becoming the brilliant and beautiful ones –
We ourselves, had neglected
But not all hope is lost
For those of us who became dedicated to cost
there was, is and always will be a plan of redemption
Focus needs to be re-shifted – ignoring the temptation
That comfortable pair of slacks – persuasion to stay in the safe zone
But there is no safety in living a purposeless life
As it snatches your ability away to call anything your own
We are beautifully brilliant
Hand crafted by God’s intent
For us to be more than just existent
Break away from the mental apartheid – resilient
Let’s go against the grain
Setting aside everything we’ve been trained
More like the washing of our brains
While countless eyes stare down on us, in disdain
Brokenness and pain – been there, done that.
The clock says its time to gain
As it quickly ticks away when watching those tiny grains of sand
The mistakes of yesterday are right on our heels,
But the possibilities of tomorrow are at the toes of every man
We want so badly to move forward,
but too afraid to take our hands off the wound.
What if it’s not healed completely and still may bleed?
Do you know how many revelations and epiphanies I had to see,
before the (self-inflicted) blinders were taken off and I found the real me?
