I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “Perception is Reality” numerous times. I’ve always interpreted that to mean whatever is perceived or thought about something is true. But is that line of thinking really true? My answer to that is yes and no. Someone’s perception of you is true for them but it doesn’t necessarily have to be true for you. What if they’re wrong? Often times people’s perception of reality is incorrect and unfounded. How many times have you seen someone judge something or someone within minutes of encountering it??  Usually that person is dead wrong in their judgment but at that point it may be too late to change their feelings.  So from that point on you’re known as person such and such (cheap, shy, rude, etc).  Be that as it may, that does not mean you have to be what people think you are.  YP’s we all need to have the confidence in ourselves to know who we are and what we stand for.

YPs I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this story Urban Prep, a charter school in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Chicago that has managed to get 100% of their first senior class admitted into a 4 year college or university.   This is truly an inspiring story for a lot of young men and women that are growing up in communities with limited resources and environments that really aren’t geared towards getting an education beyond high school diplomas.  Stories like this excite me.  Dr. Boyce Watkins put it best, “When black males put the same intensity into academic achievement that we put into dribbling basketballs and throwing footballs, we are truly phenomenal. The young men at Urban Prep will have longer, more financially-rewarding careers than they would have had by pursuing their hoop dreams at the expense of everything else. They will also be well-positioned to be effective and relevant leaders in the 21st century. Being a great athlete can make you powerful, but being a great thinker makes you EMPOWERED.”  Read Dr. Boyce’s article as well because he makes some good points as well in highlighting this great story regarding Urban Prep.  I think schools [click to continue…]

YPs, we as humans, gamble everyday of our lives.  Some people may gamble less or more conservatively than others, but we all gamble in some form or fashion. Any form of chance taking, is essentially a form of gambling.  Many people take a gamble every morning when they leave there homes with 15min to spare and they know it takes 15-20min to get to work.  They knowingly take the chance of being late to work and possibly facing disciplinary actions. People gamble on the roads everyday as well, when they speed up when the light turns yellow or squeeze their way into a turning lane, just before the turn.  Some people actually gamble with money at the track and or casinos, knowing the risk of possibly losing their hard earned money.  It is in our human nature to gamble, if only a little bit.  Most things in life worth having, involve some type of gamble or taking of chances.  The biggest gamble known to mankind however, is probably that of the human heart and one’s feelings.
