Good Quote from Bernard Hopkins

“Success doesn’t make the person, the person makes the success. Whatever you get in life, be proud of it.”

I was reading an interview featuring Bernard Hopkins, who is gearing up to fight Roy Jones Jr this Saturday April 3rd, and towards the end of the interview he said the above quote.  I’m not sure if he’s the orignator of the quote but his words definitely struck a chord with me.  Too often people look for success and/or material things to define them.  Instead of focusing on the end result of success, focus on what’s important to you.  Success is a byproduct or your hard work and dedication.  When you strive for your goals and put in the necessary work success is the end result.  There are different levels of success but, at the end of the day who you are should not be affected by the level you reach.

YPJimH’s Current Event of the Day: Obama Signs Overhaul of Student Loan Program

President Obama signed a new bill yesterday that will overhaul the educational loan system. Even though the affects will not be seen immediately, this will benefit students for years to come. The bill will cut out the middle men, companies like Sallie Mae, who make up their own interest rates which are usually very high. Instead, students will be borrowing directly from the government, who will have a fixed interest rate, and will only ask for 10% of total income monthly. This will be a sigh of a relief for individuals who owe a lot of money on loans. All in all, I believe this bill is beneficial in the long run because student loans are getting out of hand, especially the interest rates on independent student lenders. Check out the article below for more details. Read more »

Religion vs Spirituality

YPs we always talk about being a well balanced Young Professional here on YPBlogSpot and being spiritually grounded is apart of the equation regardless of your religious affiliation.  I grew up in a Christian household and my family attended a Pentecostal church every Sunday like clock work.  This was my religion.  This is where my religious/spiritual foundation was set.  I remember attending church service multiple nights per week and attending just about every church event.  I use to be that Sunday school student that would answer all of the questions because my parents use to read my brother and I a bed time story out of the Bible every night before we went to bed which definitely contributed to my spiritual growth.

Over the years I began to withdraw from the church.  I use to tell my mother that my clothes didn’t fit, I would hide my shoes, I would do any and everything to get out of church but Mom Dukes wasn’t having it.  For instance, if I claimed my shoes didn’t fit she would make me get dressed and we would stop at Payless on our way to church (Lol).  Once I reached the age where I didn’t have to go, I didn’t.  My step-dad use to Read more »

New Album Spotlight: Erykah Badu- New Amerykah, Pt.2 Return of Ankh

Erykah Badu returns with her newest album “New Amerykah, pt.2…” in stores today. I had a chance to check out the album and if you’re a fan of her work then this album won’t disappoint. This past weekend Erykah’s video for her first single “Window Seat” had the internet buzzing due to some brave actions Erykah pulls off in the video. I won’t ruin it for you but I will say that all of this happened in real time and there were no green screens. The video was shot in Texas and everything you’re about to witness did happen. I encourage you all to definitely watch the video in it’s entirety because she makes a great point about individualism at the end. Plus I think this song is really dope. Check out “Window Seat” below.

New Album Spotlight- Usher “Raymond v. Raymond”

Usher returns with his new album “Raymond v. Raymond” today. A lot of people (including myself) have been down on Usher since his last album “Here I Stand.” Personally I didn’t feel like that was one of his better albums but, Usher has definitely come back strong on his new album “Raymond v. Raymond.” Check out “OMG” and my personal favorite “Mars vs. Venus” below and support the album, in stores now.

Accountability|You Did It

FYI: Things just don’t happen, there is a cause and effect to everything so stop acting like you’re innocent and the victim.

One of the most annoying things to me is the fact that some people aren’t accountable for their actions.  Now don’t get me wrong there are instances in which we can become a victim of circumstances but for the most part we affect what happens and doesn’t happen to us.  Some decisions we make have a ripple affect on our future depending what good or bad decisions we make.  For instance, if you’ve ever used the following sayings as an excuse you annoy me and aren’t being accountable.

I was drunk!

I was on birth control!

I can’t get a job because I have a record!

Good Quote from Les Brown

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”.

- Les Brown

Happy Monday YP’s! This is one of my favorite quotes of all time, because it is inspires me to do, and become better. I believe I first heard this quote from Beanie Siegel in a song titled “Feel It In The Air”. I love this quote because it talks about reaching for your own greatness, and dreaming big. Every one of us has the potential to do something great, because we all have different passions, and interests. But it is only potential, until we put it into action. We always have to continue to challenge ourselves, and raise the bar on what we can accomplish. If we do our best, and fail to reach all of our goals, we know that we will still be successful, because sometimes the journey can be just as worthy as the end result.

NCAA Tourney: Final Four

THE 2010 FINAL FOUR TEAMS

If you’ve paid any attention to ESPN these past few weeks then you’ll know this tournament has been one of the most unpredictable and exciting tournaments in a long time. This year three of the number 1 seeded teams have been eliminated before reaching the final four which is unusual to say the least. Number 1 seeded teams are always favored to be the last 4 teams standing. This year the Final Four teams are as follows: #5 Butler, #5Michigan State, #2 West Virginia, and Duke (the only #1 seed left).

If you revisit the blog (March Madness is upon us!!!) from a few weeks ago you’ll see that me and YPRuck were completely wrong with our picks. Only one of our teams made the final four (I picked West Virginia). As the tourney Read more »

Now Arriving…

Happy Friday’s YP’s! One of my passions in life is history, and just reading, and studying history. I believe that my passion for history really took off because of my 10th grade history teacher, Mr. Arnold. Mr. Arnold always made history come alive, which made me want to actually visit these places that he talked about. When I studied history my imagination ran wild, and I was just fascinated about how this world came to be, from the beginning of time all the way to the present day. I am sure everyone who is interested in history has a favorite era that they like to study; I particulary am interested in the 20th century which includes WW I, WW II, and the civil rights movement.

I say that to say that because of history, I have so many places that I would like to visit and explore in the world.  I am intrigued with different cultures, and would love to see how people interact in other countries. Two of the places Read more »

Kobe Bryant: Nubeo Black Mamba Watches

YPs, we are all aware of Kobe Bryant’s accomplishments and greatness on the courts.  What some may not know, is that he is an extremely intelligent business man, outside of sports.  Kobe has decided that he would like his name to be associated with luxury watches as well.  It is to be expected that if Kobe does anything, he will DO IT BIG!!! His new watch line is called ‘Nubeo Black Mamba.’  These watches may not be for you or me, but for the ‘Monetary Elite’ these will be a nice addition to the collection.  These watches start out at $25k and range all the way up to $285k, depending on customization.  Whether you can afford it or not, these are some hot time pieces!!! ‘Tis The Season…

YPs, as the nice weather approaches, the heels will come out in full force.  Here is a 4.5 inch heel, from the Late Great Alexander McQueen’s Final Collection.  He was known for pushing the limits of fashion, and these are no exception.  Whether or not these are for you, you must admire the creativity he put into his work.  These shoes go for $1,169.  So make sure these are really for you, before you use your rent/mortgage money to get a pair.  YPs Stand Up!!!

Audi S5

YPs, We put a lot of ‘Desires, Wants & Needs’ up on the site.  Most times however, we focus on the extremely high end items, FOR MOTIVATION.  This vehicle however, is not that far out of reach.  This is actually what I would like for my next car to be.  The headlights are what first attracted me to this vehicle.  THEY WERE JUST SEXY!!! I then looked it up online and even visited an Audi dealer to see them up close.  I am working towards being able to drive this vehicle in the very near future.  The price tag for the S5 starts at about $52k however, they have a similar model the A5 that starts at $36k.  So we’re not talking ‘LAMBO’ prices.  YPs, work hard for what you want.  YPs Stand Up!!!

Maui, Hawaii

YPs, we all have ‘Desires, Wants & Needs,’ and I know that every YoungProfessional has ambitions to have a beautiful home.  We may have to scale back a little bit until we reach the level that we want to reach, in order to purchase such a home, but that’s all a part of being smart.  This home is a beautiful home in Maui, Hawaii.  The size of your home does not make or break who you are.  This is just an example of what we can all achieve with hard work and dedication.  A LOT OF HARD WORK AND DEDICATION.  This place is valued at $14,995,000.  So for now, we will use this as motivation.  In the future, WE MAY ALL BE NEIGHBORS!!! YPs Stand Up!!!

To Be or Not to be “Responsible”

“You are who you are when nobody is looking”

Being responsible is defined as being: answerable or accountable, as for something within one’s power, control, or management. YPs i’m coming at y’all today with my feelings on responsibility due to a particular incident that has happened to me twice in a matter of months. A few months ago I purchased a used car in good to new condition. Tomorrow marks the third month I’ve had the car and it’s been hit twice. Now neither of the damages are that crucial and they will be repaired. I understand that accidents happen and there really isn’t much you can do about that. At this point i’m not even upset about it happening. I’m more upset that I don’t know how the damage occured and who to hold responsible. Read more »
