I came across a very interesting article that I wanted to share. It talks about what advice the elder generation would give to the younger generation if they could do it all over again. The elderly share some very good insight on what is really important, which can help any young professional today. Enjoy.

(CNN) – In an episode of the popular sitcom “30 Rock,” television CEO Jack has a hallucinatory encounter with his future self, from whom he receives life advice that helps him avoid major mistakes.

Most of us would also like to know which choices and decisions we make as young people will benefit us later on — or come back to haunt us. Although there’s no way to step into our own futures, we can get a very good sense of what mistakes younger folks should avoid. We can ask our “future selves”: our elders.

Based on this premise, over the past six years, I’ve conducted several studies involving 1,200 older Americans regarding the advice they would offer to members of the younger generation. The research has included a national, random-sample survey, as well as in-depth interviews with several hundred persons identified as “wise.” To protect respondents’ identities, actual names are not used in the study. Participants ranged in age from age 60 to 108 (average age was 74) and represented a geographically and economically diverse sample of the older population.

The surveys addressed the question, what mistakes should younger people avoid? Respondents were also asked their views on what people are most likely to regret when they get to the end of life.

Answers were categorized into major themes regarding mistakes and possible regrets. The findings reveal some interesting cautions for the young (and not so young as well).

According to America’s elders, here are some of the biggest mistakes young people make: [click to continue…]

Resiliency

by JimH on 12/23/2011

in YP Blogs

I know it’s been awhile since I last blogged, no excuses. I hope that readers of our site are doing well, and staying focused on their goals and dreams. I have had a hectic schedule with grad school, working six days out the week, but I hope hard work pays off (cross fingers…toes too). I also have been doing pretty well in school, with a cumulative GPA of a 3.8! (Never seen that many A’s in my life, but I guess better late than never..lol)

Resilience

Well the topic that I would like to blog about is that of resiliency! Webster’s definition of resilience is an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change. I have really come to admire this term because of what it stands for and represents. I think that I have come to love this term because I strive to possess this quality in my own life. In school, I have seen this term over and over again and how pertains to at –risk youth who make it out of underserved neighborhoods, single parent households, and other harsh realities. When a youth possesses this quality, they are able to bounce back through a range of obstacles or misfortune in their lives, and use them as motivation for success, rather than to succumb to their environment or circumstances. I believe this very much pertains to our age group as young professionals today.

“Winner” by Flauce: Flowers in the Attic

Can’t you see I’m blessed…no more giving into gossip…

Can’t lead me a stray I don’t care what you say.

No weapon against me shall prosper.

I don’t care bout being popular.

Can’t let the devil box me up.

I’m a rise to the top with ya.

With faith I die for ya.

Ride for you like the mafia.

Last time we heard from Flauce we shared his first gospel rap single titled “Memories” Flauce sent me a text a couple of weeks ago regarding a new single he was getting ready to release.  Ladies and gentlemen, YPBlogSpot is proud to share Flauce’s latest single “Winner”.  Flauce lyrically expresses how he’s winning with GOD by his side in spite of his falling short time and time again.  I think Flauce is onto something and creating a lane for hip-hop fans that are in the church that are looking for non-cheesy gospel rap.  If Flauce didn’t use GOD or Christ references you probably wouldn’t know this was a gospel rap song.  Please take a listen and share your thoughts and support good music.  Thank Flauce for providing a soundtrack for us “WINNERS”!!!

“I feel I know a little bit of everything but I’ve grown unfamiliar with limitations…”

Wale is one of my favorite young hip-hop artists because of his inspirational and motivational messages in his music.  This except is from the intro off his latest mixtape “Eleven One Eleven Theory” that he released as a precursor to his 2nd studio album “Ambition” is released November 1, 2011 (Hence “Eleven One Eleven Theory”).  Now to the topic at hand: people always tell you that you can do this but you can’t do that.  Or you may have someone tell you that you doing too much at times.  But many times people attempt to place the limitations of others on you and as with everything limitations aren’t the same for everybody.  This excerpt I derived from Wale really registered with me.  I am on the brink of taking on quite a few new challenges and becoming “unfamiliar with limitations” is the only way I am going to meet these challenges and accomplish my goals.  YP’s identify your limitations and work on reducing/overcoming your limitations then get rid of them all together.  See you guys and girls in Successville minus the limitations of course…
